Laura's Last Weekend

It seem that the call of the road is too strong to pass up. We just returned from another two day road trip, but this time a little closer to home: Atlin. Of course we had to create a greater challenge this last trip and we decided to tent this time. No cushy warm mini van with a remote start, but a dig a hole in the snow and set up a tent trip.

We spent Saturday morning with the usual weekend routine here, leisurely spending time with hot tea and coffee, and working the laptops before getting dressed for the day and stuffing the car (no possible retreat to the van in the frigid night).

Departing at the usual noontime we made Atlin in short time, but it was still getting dusky at 4:30.

Atlin is a historic gold rush town with plenty of unique old building and a few newer unique ones.

For the first trip, Takhini Hot Springs was reasonably hot and had heated change rooms. Not much of a challenge. The next weekend we went to Liard Hot Springs, where the water was HOT, but had unheated change rooms. This weekend the challenge was much greater! Atlin Warm Springs is only warm and has no facilities!

Arriving at the Warm Springs we set-up the tent in the late dusk, cooked supper in the dark and then we were ready to tackle the springs!

The Atlin Warm Springs by daylight.

With no one else around, we could set up the tent close to the springs.

We made the best of warm waters, but they were not warm enough for a lengthy stay.
The skies full of stars, mountains illuminated by the almost full moon, but alas, again no Northern Lights.

Not wanting a wet dog loose in the tent that night, we wisely put Tyson in charge of guarding our towels and clothes.

What can I say the things tourists wear! (I can say that now without reprisal, as Laura won't read this until after she has left!)

Despite a drop to -19ºC, the accommodations received two thumbs up.

We finished Sunday off with a little cross-country skiing near Surprise Lake.
